  • Don Cherry's racist rant about immigrants should be his last

"You people ... you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that", Cherry said on Saturday night's "Coach's Corner" segment, broadcast on Sportsnet.

Sportsnet released an official statement on Sunday morning condemning Cherry's behavior and apologizing for his "discriminatory" and "offensive" comments.

He said he didn't see immigrants wearing poppies to honor the country's fallen on Remembrance Day, which will be observed on Monday.

"These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada", Cherry added, while pointing his finger angrily at the camera.

MacLean spoke ahead of Sportsnet's hockey broadcast, claiming accountability for allowing Cherry to make such comments.

Viewers took to social media to denounce Cherry's segment, while Sportsnet president Bart Yabsley issued an apology and the National Hockey League distanced themselves from Cherry's comments.

Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie called his comments "despicable".

"We're proud of diverse cultural heritage and we'll always stand up for it", she said on Twitter. "We were wrong, and I sincerely apologize and I want to thank you for calling Don and me on that last night".

Laurel Griggs Dies: Broadway Actress Who Played Ivanka In ‘Once’ Was 13
Following reports that a 13-year-old Broadway actress has died , condolences from those who knew her have begun surfacing online. The late teen performed the role for 17 months between 2013 and 2015 and it became the gig she was best known for.

"Cherry's remarks were ignorant and prejudiced, and at this point in our history can't go without comment", tweeted former Ontario premier Bob Rae.

"If anyone in future suggests Don Cherry be given Order of Canada, remember this", Ahmed wrote on Twitter on Saturday night.

She wrote that it has not been her experience that new immigrants don't wear poppies or appreciate the tragedies of war, and further condemned the sentiment behind Cherry's remarks.

Cherry's comments were disgraceful, but again, not surprising coming from Canada's version of Donald Trump.

"We don't honour the sacrifice of those who died in battle by sowing division or distrust", Simons wrote.

Unfortunately, the 85-year-old Cherry refuses to grow with the game. "We're all Canadians and wear our poppies proudly". We see it in travels with our show and with Hockey Night in Canada.
