Max expected to resume commercial service in January: Boeing

  • American's first 737 MAX 8 departing from Boeing Field on a test flight

According to the Seattle Times, Boeing released a statement saying it was in the final stages of the necessary software upgrades to its 737 MAX aircraft, but the Federal Aviation Administration has not completed its audit of the second flight-control computer used on each plane. This explains why both American and Southwest on Friday took the MAX out of their flight schedules until early March.

Boeing Co said Monday it now expects its grounded 737 MAX to resume commercial service in January as it works to address questions from regulators over its documentation for revisions to the plane's software.

"Based on this schedule, it is possible that the resumption of MAX deliveries to airline customers could begin in December, after certification, when the FAA issues an Airworthiness Directive rescinding the grounding order", Boeing said.

"Subject to strict regulatory approval, we continue to complete key milestones that put us on a path to certification of the MAX in December, with training approved in January, paving the way for the safe return of the MAX to commercial service", a Boeing spokesman told FOX Business on Monday. The company completed step one of five toward getting the aircraft back in the skies last week.

The FAA must complete that audit before a key certification test flight can be scheduled.

Police called for calm and denied "false and malicious" rumours that officers had been ordered to recklessly use firearms. The dramatic scene was caught on video, as demonstrators blocked train lines and roads during the morning commute.

After that, the final product will be submitted to the FAA to support software certification and multi-regulatory body, the Joint Operational Evaluation board, will conduct a a multi-day simulator session with global regulatory pilots to validate training requirements.

The earliest that the 737 Max could once again carry passengers is in January, although that timing would be tight as the pilot training approval process has many steps including a public comment period.

At each step of this process Boeing has worked closely with the FAA and other regulators.

"We're providing detailed documentation, had them fly in the simulators, and helped them understand our logic and the design for the new procedures, software and proposed training material to ensure that they are completely satisfied as to the airplane's safety".

Harned said that once the FAA and EASA clear the MAX to fly, most other foreign regulators, including Turkey, India, and the United Arab Emirates, will follow quickly.
