Trump administration proposes new fee for asylum-seekers, citizen applicants

Under the new plan, that price would go up to $765. On Friday, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) introduced a new set of fees for those looking to apply for asylum in the U.S. They said they hope the new fees will alleviate the pressure that the growing asylum backlog has on the agency.

The courts recently blocked a proposal known as the "public charge rule" from taking effect, which would deny green cards and other visas to applicants who are deemed likely to use public benefits.

DHS plans to implement the electronic registration system in time for the fiscal year (FY) 2021 cap season, which begins on April 1, 2020, assuming all system tests are complete.

If enacted, the proposed rule will increase citizenship fees to $1,170 up from $640.

The rule is the latest move from the Trump administration to restrict pathways to citizenship for immigrants already living in the country and those seeking asylum.

The Trump administration this week will formalize a proposal that could make it one of just four countries in the world that charge asylum-seekers for entry.

If it is implemented, it would make the USA one of the few countries in the world that charges asylum seekers application fees.

In addition to the fee increase, the agency will also eliminate waivers that it offered to impoverished immigrants.
