Lawyers for 2020 presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard on Monday fired off a letter to representatives of failed 2016 presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, demanding that the Chicago-born politician "verbally retract" recent statements that suggested Gabbard was being "groomed" as a third-party candidate by Russian Federation. Gabbard's lawyer took issue with that interpretation, saying that it "makes no sense" in light of what Clinton actually said on the podcast.
Gabbard's legal counsel rejected Clinton's explanation for the "grooming" comment, in the Monday letter calling the idea that she meant Republicans "spin developed only after you realized the defamatory nature of your statement, and therefore your legal liability". "Besides your statement, no law enforcement or intelligence agencies have claimed, much less presented any evidence, that Congresswoman Gabbard is a Russian asset".
After initial reporting that Clinton said the Russians were grooming Gabbard, Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill tweeted that Clinton didn't say the Russians were 'grooming anyone, ' and that the question was about Republicans.
Shortly after, Gabbard - an Army National Guard Major - slammed Clinton via social media, branding her the "queen of warmongers" and accusing her of orchestrating a New York Times hit piece released ahead of last month's Democrat presidential debate in Ohio. Clinton additionally referred to Jill Stein as "also a Russian asset" after talking about Gabbard, with the "also" seeming to suggest Clinton thinks Gabbard is one as well.

S&P 500 e-minis were down 12 points, or 0.39 per cent and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were down 31.75 points, or 0.38 per cent. In Europe, Germany's DAX fell 0.4 per cent to 13,176 while the CAC 40 in France was down 0.1 per cent at 5,884.
Gabbard has gone on record stating she has no intention of running as a third-party candidate if she fails to win the Democratic nomination.
"In making the statement, you knew it was false. This fabricated story is so facially improbable that it is actionable as defamation".
"Moreover, the Republicans-not-Russians spin can not explain away your statement that Congresswoman Gabbard is 'a Russian asset.' This is, of course, because your Republicans-not-Russians spin is rubbish", the letter continues. Congresswoman Gabbard is not a Russian asset and is not being groomed by Russia.
Early reports about Clinton's comments said that the former secretary of state meant that Gabbard was being groomed to be a third-party candidate by Russians, but it was later clarified that she was referring to Republicans. More recently, Gabbard appeared on ABC's "The View" to defend herself against Clinton's claims.
