Virginia doctor accused of performing ‘unnecessary surgeries’ on patients without their consent

The review also revealed that Perwaiz allegedly had a "propensity to conduct bundled surgeries", involving laparoscopy, dilation and curettage, and lysis of adhesions, the affidavit states.

According to the documents, one woman visited Perwaiz concerning an ectopic pregnancy.

From 2011 to 2014, Perwaiz allegedly asked the patiently "routinely" whether she planned on having another baby, the affidavit states. In 2014, when the patient sought treatment from a fertility specialist, that doctor advised her that "both fallopian tubes were burnt down to nubs, making natural conception impossible".

A Virginia doctor was arrested Friday for allegedly performing unnecessary surgical procedures on women without their knowledge or consent.

The Chesapeake doctor allegedly told one woman that she needed a hysterectomy after discovering the "imminent onset" of cancer. That patient learned that there were less invasive procedures available when consulting with another doctor, according to the court documents. She insisted on a less extensive procedure, but after the surgery, she woke up to "discover Perwaiz performed a total abdominal hysterectomy", the documents claim. The patient wanted a less invasive procedure and thought that they had agreed on a laparoscopic surgery to remove her ovaries.

According to the affidavit, one patient was told by Perwaiz in 2012 that pre-cancerous cells had been detected during an exam and that a hysterectomy would be the best course of action.

He was arrested on Friday and has been held since at Western Tidewater Regional Jail in Suffolk, Virginia.

Lawrence Woodward Jr., Perwaiz's attorney, denied his client was a flight risk, saying his client knew he was under investigation for about two weeks.

Records also show that Perwaiz has been investigated for medical malpractice. Just two years later, in 1982, Perwaiz lost his admitting privileges at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center "due to poor clinical judgment and for performing unnecessary surgeries".

Perwaiz was ultimately censured for poor record keeping, according to the court documents.

According to NBC News, Perwaiz has faced eight malpractice suits in his career, including allegations that he caused permanent and life-threatening injuries to patients.

He was still wearing green scrubs when he made his initial appearance at the U.S. District Court in Norfolk, where he was ordered to be held without bond, according to the newspaper.
