Many people across the area reported seeing an incredibly bright flash of light in the sky, followed by a streak slicing down toward Earth from above.

Residents posted videos of the meteor falling out of the sky via Twitter.

Officials have indicated that the fireball was likely the result of the Taurid meteor shower, which was at its peak late Monday.

Vergal wrote: 'I was watching an [Earth Cam] camera from St. Louis, Missouri about 30 minutes ago and saw a [meteor]!

"The Taurids are rich in fireballs, so if you see a Taurid it can be very brilliant and it'll knock your eyes out", NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke told Space.com.

The meteor appeared to be a fireball, an especially vibrant meteor that appears brighter than the planet Venus in the sky, the American Meteor Society said.
