Friends Reunion Special in Early Development at HBO Max

"So we're just trying really, we're working on something". Reportedly, WarnerMedia Entertainment and direct-to-consumer chairman Bob Greenblatt has been the one leading the charge for the Friends reunion.

Aniston, who orchestrated the recent reunion of the cast for a photo that launched her Instagram account (and temporarily crashed the platform), recently alluded to the project while on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Friends first began airing on television in 1994, and by the end of its run in 2004 after ten seasons, it had become one of the most-watched sitcoms in television history.

The special, which is still in the planning stages, would help launch Friends reruns on HBO Max.

HBO Max paid US$85 million per year in a five-year deal for the streaming rights worth US$425 million, after Netflix had paid a sum of between US$80 million and US$100 million to keep "Friends" on their service for all of 2019.

It's reported, however, that the reunion will be slightly different than what we originally expected, as it was revealed that the episode will be "unscripted.' This leads us to believe that it will be more of a 'chat show" style episode, rather than an actual Friends episode with the cast in character.
