MLB checking into report '17 Astros stole signs, broke rules

There are no ifs, ands or buts about it.

The Astros players would decipher the signs and then relay to the batter which pitch was likely coming next by literally banging trash cans or hitting the ceiling of the dugout to signal if it was an off-speed pitch or a fastball. If a team figures out another team's signs through old-fashioned methods, that's OK by the league.

The question now for the Astros is whether this 2017 sign-stealing scheme will earn significant punishment since it came before the new rules were implemented.

A feed from a camera in center field, fixed on the opposing catcher's signs, was hooked up to a television monitor that was placed on a wall steps from the team's home dugout at Minute Maid Park, in the tunnel that runs between the dugout and the clubhouse.

The website said the process was started by a struggling hitter and a coach, neither of whom was identified.

Obviously, the league shouldn't need to prove that the Astros are cheating. We want to follow the rules and we want to compete and win.

I can't say for certain that everyone is involved in the actual stealing of the signs. But clearly, there were guys that benefitted as well.
