President's rule imposed in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena moves SC

  • Maharashtra Sena will not approach SC against governor’s refusal to give time to prove majority

This follows Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari's report to the Centre which stated that the formation of a stable government is impossible in the current situation despite all his efforts. Congress and the NCP said that they have not yet taken any decision on Shiv Sena's proposal of forming a government and will hold further discussions.

The Shiv Sena moved the Supreme Court against the governor's decision for not heeding to its Monday evening request for more time.

The Shiv Sena was invited to form the state government on November 10 and the petitioner had indicated its willingness to form the government on November 11, it said. But it does not mean the largest party should rejoice.

According to sources, Thackeray told his party legislators in a closed-door meeting that the BJP was still trying to reach out and a possible BJP-Sena government was a possibility.

The Governor had recommended the imposition of President's Rule following the political stalemate over the government formation in the state. On ideological differences with the Congress-NCP, he said he was collecting information on how the BJP had alliances with the Peoples Democratic Party in Jammu and Kashmir, with the Janata Dal (United) and Ram Vilas Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party in Bihar, and with the N Chandrababu Naidu-led Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh, none of whom espoused the Hindutva ideology. "So the option of going with the BJP again may have ended, but it was ended by them", he said. He said that they hadn't discussed sharing of power yet as the priority for them are the policies of a government that would be headed by the Sena.

Attacking the BJP over its claim that the Sena had been in touch with the Congress-NCP since the October 24 poll results were announced, Thackeray said he had allied with the chief NDA constituent in its "dark times".

Referring to the BJP statement that Sena should form government with support from the NCP and Congress, Thackeray said "we should respect their wishes".

Thackeray took a dig at Governor BS Koshyari over the denial of more time to drum up support for government formation in the state - the party had failed to produce the required letters of support from the NCP and the Congress when it met Koshyari on Monday night to stake a claim to form the government. "We needed 48 hours, but the Governor didn't give us time", the Sena president said.
