Pro-democracy candidates in Hong Kong made huge gains on Monday following elections which saw a record number of voters turnout amid protests that have rocked the city for over six months.

So far, pro-democracy candidates have won 159 out of 452 seats in 18 district council races. People are for the anti-extradition movement.

A record 71 percent of Hong Kong's 4.1 million registered voters cast ballots in the city's only fully democratic elections, well exceeding the 47 percent turnout in the same poll four years ago, when pro-democracy candidates won just 100 seats.

"Many people expressed their desire to be able to hold to account the city's leaders, through the ballot box-especially in preserving basic freedoms, autonomy and the rule of law-not rule by law", he wrote in a Facebook post.

Beijing and its subordinates in the city previously entertained the thought that the latest spate of disruptions and violence, in particular the occupation of and clashes on university campuses as well as the closure of major expressways and metro lines, could galvanize middle-of-the-road Hongkongers into picking pro-establishment candidates whose platforms always centered around stopping violence and bringing rioters to justice.

The stunning result was a humiliating rebuke to Beijing and dashed any lingering hopes of Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam that the increasingly aggressive tactics deployed by radical protesters would encourage a silent majority to turn out in support of her administration.

But in a reminder of the protesters' commitment and the volatile situation, by Monday evening a crowd had gathered outside the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where a handful of protesters were still under siege by police, and newly elected pro-democratic councillors went to meet them inside.

Voting began peacefully on Sunday morning, with no signs of a major police presence at polling booths despite almost six months of sometimes violent unrest in the Chinese-controlled city.

"We have to stand up for what we believe in", Lee said.

The highly controversial use of the police to enforce a crackdown would be taken to a new level and fear would be maintained by a mounting number of arrests and ominous reminders that the People's Armed Police were ready and poised to storm into Hong Kong and restore order.

They waited an hour to vote. "We want to be involved in the process, especially with everything that has happened", she said. An estimated 30 protesters, fearing arrests, are still holding out at the campus, which has been ringed by police for days.

Rangers willing to move fixtures to help Scotland, says Steven Gerrard
Rangers chief Steven Gerrard has denied that defender Glen Kamara has been the subject of offers by any English team. And Scotland boss Steve Clarke has urged the governing bodies to do "all they can" to ensure the Sunday is left free.

"Beijing would see the need to adjust its policies in the wake of Sunday's election results, and appointing a commission of inquiry was a feasible option to address the demands of Hong Kong people". "But I still urge people to come out and show our discontent to Beijing".

"This is historic. As our city plummets from being semi-autonomous to semi-authoritarian, we react by showing what's democracy in action", Wong tweeted.

"There is a great groundswell in Hong Kong who believes in democracy", says David Alton, worldwide observer and a member of the British House of Lords.

"The voice of the public is loud and clear". "The worldwide community must acknowledge that, nearly six months in, public opinion has NOT turned against the movement". "We will fight on", said Henry Sin Ho-fai, a pro-democracy candidate who won.

Ho admitted thanking the men for "defending their home", but has denied involvement in the attacks.

Several pro-Beijing incumbent were unseated in shock defeats, including legislator Junius Ho, who lost his seat in the Lok Tsui district council of Tuen Mun to his rival by a margin of around 1,200 votes.

Among them were firebrand lawmaker Junius Ho, one of the politicians most loathed by democracy activists, and who was stabbed this month during campaigning. "I said what are you doing?"

State-controlled media in China on Monday downplayed the landslide electoral victory claimed by pan democrats in Hong Kong with an editorial calling the race an "unfair... manipulation".

"The problem with revolutions is never how they begin but how they end", he said.

"If I was Carrie Lam, I should prepare for the speech of my resignation", pro-democracy activist and legislator Leung Kwok-hung said.
