Cohen - who was presented with the ADL's Leadership Award - hailed such companies as "the greatest propaganda machine in history" and accused them of contributing to "hate and violence" and the rise in "murderous attacks on religious and ethnic minorities".

The film star and comedian singled out the social media company during a speech in NY at the Anti-Defamation League's Never is Now summit where he took shots at Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg's October defence of his company's position not to ban political adverts that contain falsehoods.

Targeting major social media platforms - Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google and Google's parent company, Alphabet - as "publishers" disseminating information to billions of people around the globe, Baron Cohen called on those in charge of the platforms to adopt stricter policies against conspiracy theories and hate speech.

The actor also criticised Google, Twitter and YouTube for pushing "absurdities to billions of people".

"Today around the world, demagogues appeal to our worst instincts", he said. Conspiracy theories, once confined to the fringe, are going mainstream. We have lost, it seems, a shared sense of the basic facts upon which democracy depends'. And what do all these risky trends have in common?

"All this hate and violence is being facilitated by a handful of web firms that quantity to the best propaganda machine in historical past", he mentioned, noting the ability of his comedy prior to now to disclose individuals's indifference to anti-Semitism and homophobia. The algorithms these platforms depend on deliberately amplify the type of content that keeps users engaged. He hit out at social media giants for facilitating the spread of misinformation around political campaigns.

Baron Cohen opened his speech by attacking President Trump's senior adviser Stephen Miller.

Speaking last month at Georgetown University, Zuckerberg said that Facebook have made freedom of expression their priority.

Ballon D’Or: Eden Hazard reveals deserving players to win award
All three are nominated for the award after helping the Reds to Champions League glory last season. If Sadio had won AFCON with Senegal, there would have been no debate.

First, Zuckerberg tried to portray this whole issue as "choices...around free expression".

But on Thursday, Cohen tossed aside the humorous facade to excoriate the social media industry and the "autocracy" he says it promotes in a non-ironic speech. This is about giving people, including some of the most reprehensible people on earth, the biggest platform in history to reach a third of the planet.

He in contrast Zuckerberg's argument that "interference with free speech" rules with a neo-Nazi who invades a restaurant threatens clients and calls for that Jews be killed whereas the proprietor has to supply him a chic eight-course meal.

'Sadly, there will always be racists, misogynists, anti-Semites and child abusers.

In related news, The Social Network writer Aaron Sorkin has written an open letter to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in which he claims the CEO has allowed "crazy lies" to spread on his platform. This is utter nonsense.

Despite this, Facebook has refused to follow suit said that it does not think it should be the one to make decisions about its users speech. We're not asking these companies to determine the boundaries of free speech across society. Facts do exist. And if these internet companies really want to make a difference, they should hire enough monitors to actually monitor, work closely with groups like the ADL, insist on facts and purge these lies and conspiracies from their platforms.

"The Silicon Six-all billionaires, all Americans-who care more about boosting their share price than about protecting democracy", he said.
