At least 14 people were killed in an attack on a church in eastern Burkina Faso on Sunday, government said.

President Roch Marc Christian Kabore said on Twitter that he condemned "the barbaric attack" in the town of Hantoukoura.

Although there's a dearth of information regarding how the attack was carried out and who did it, members of the armed forces were caring for the wounded and combing the area for the unknown gunmen.

The attack took place on Sunday.

Reports indicate that hundreds of people have been killed so far this year and more than 150,000 have fled their homes due to attacks which spill across the Sahel region.

Islamic extremists have been active in Burkina Faso since 2015.

The attack came less than two months after 37 people were killed in an attack on a mining company, with additional 60 people believed wounded.

According to local sources, the attack happened in the village of Foutouri in the east of the country, which is notorious for crime and the activities of suspected jihadist groups with links to al Qaeda* and Daesh*.

Attacks have intensified this year as the under-equipped, poorly trained army struggles to contain the Islamist militancy in the former French colony.
