Trump says he will restore tariffs on Brazil, Argentina ‘immediately’

US President Donald Trump on Monday attacked Brazil and Argentina over their respective currency depreciations, saying he will immediately reintroduce tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from them.

Trump has long grumbled about the dollar's strength and urged the Fed to abandon decades of precedent and act to weaken the greenback.

- Trump said in a tweet.

Across the country, farm bankruptcies have surged 24% since September 2018, a few months after U.S. trade disputes with China and other countries led to higher tariffs on key farm goods including soyabeans, cotton and dairy, according to analysis by the American Farm Bureau Federation.

"If needed, I can also talk to Trump, I have an open channel with him", he added as he left the presidential palace. The country has been in the grip of a recession for over a year, with the peso in a downward spiral. But it also signaled that it planned no further interest rate cuts absent clear evidence of a worsening USA economic outlook. In addition, Argentina's Foreign Ministry said it will begin negotiations with the U.S. State Department. Brazil steel accounts for about 3.5 per cent of the 110 million tons of steel consumed in the US a year. Trump falsely claims China is paying the USA billions and billions of dollars in tariffs.

The Brazilian real strengthened 0.2% to 4.2267 per dollar at 9:23 a.m.in NY.

The reinstatement of tariffs will boost USA steel prices, benefiting domestic producers, while hurting manufacturers in Brazil.

AK Steel Holding Corp. rose 3.3% at 9:38 a.m.in NY. U.S. Steel Corp. was up 1.8%, and Steel Dynamics Inc. gained 1%. Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau's American depositary receipts declined 0.5 per cent. The company runs plants in the U.S.

Representatives for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative could not be immediately reached for comment.

Both South American nations were among a group of USA allies that Trump had exempted from steel and aluminum tariffs in March 2018.

He also touted the economic boom since imposing sweeping tariffs on steel and aluminum imports a year ago. The move allowed buyers to request exemptions for imports from key suppliers.
