Le chef letton s'est éteint chez lui à Saint Pétersbourg, dans la nuit de samedi à dimanche.

La vie de Jansons raconte autant son amour de la musique que l'état du monde durant la seconde moitié du XXe siècle: né à Riga, juif, pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, englobé ensuite dans l'Union soviétique, il se forme au célèbre Conservatoire Rimski-Korsakov de Saint-Pétersbourg.

"Il m'a donné confiance en moi et j'ai senti que je ne pouvais plus refouler ce désir intérieur de diriger" confiait le chef espagnol au Quotidien en septembre 2015, au moment de sa prise de fonction à la baguette de l'orchestre grand-ducal. Sa lecture de La Dame de pique de Tchaikovski aura entre autres réusites marqué l'édition 2018 du festival estival de Salzbourg. Dix ans plus tard, Mariss Jansons devient le directeur musical du Philharmonique d'Oslo. Il succède en 2004 à Riccardo Chailly à la tête de l'Orchestre royal du Concertgebouw d'Amsterdam. Il était membre honoraire des orchestres philharmoniques de Berlin et de Vienne.

"Bien sûr, je dois analyser ce qui se passe quand je conduis; je ne peux pas me concentrer simplement sur les émotions et l'expression. Mais c'est une question d'habitude", avait-il invoqué. Mariss Jansons avait été victime d'un infarctus en 1996 lors d'une représentation de La Bohème à Oslo et il avait dû annuler plusieurs concerts cet été.
