  • Fired Navy Secretary Confirms He's Part of the Deep State Pens Op-Ed

Ousted Navy Secretary Richard Spencer sharply criticized President Donald Trump's "shocking and unprecedented intervention" in the case of a Navy SEAL accused of war crimes in Iraq, saying Trump's efforts underscored that the president "has very little understanding" of the military.

One was a now former Navy secretary who was sacked for his resistance against President Trump's intervention in a war crimes case, and the other was a white supremacist who was once again caught ranting about Jewish and black people.

Mr Spencer was sacked on Sunday by Defence Secretary Mark Esper for working a private deal with the White House to ensure Mr Gallagher be allowed to retire without losing his Seal status.

In his article, Mr Spencer acknowledged his mistake but said Mr Trump's actions were detrimental to the military.

As Spencer detailed in his op-ed, he on separate occasions throughout the case "pushed back" against the president's involvement, which he said was evident from the start. Gallagher was acquitted of murder but convicted of bringing discredit to the armed services after posing with the corpse of an Islamic State prisoner.

That request raised questions about whether the convicted officer should be allowed to retire at his current rank, Mr Spencer wrote. The navy jury had talked about he must aloof be demoted.

"The President has very little understanding of what it means to be in the military, to fight ethically or to be governed by a uniform set of rules and practices", Mr Spencer wrote in a piece published by the Washington Post on Wednesday.

Mr Trump, who had tweeted support for Mr Gallagher and stated his case had been "handled very badly from the beginning", short-circuited the Navy's administrative review of Mr Gallagher's status by ordering Mr Spencer to restore Mr Gallagher's rank.

Still, Mr Trump ordered Mr Spencer to transfer Mr Gallagher from the brig to the equivalent of an enlisted barracks.

The decision was the latest twist in the Gallagher matter. Trump has made no expose of the three SEAL officers additionally ordered to be reviewed. All three had overseen Gallagher during his 2017 deployment to Iraq.

But Modly talked about there were better ways to accommodate any "failures in conduct, efficiency, judgment, or professionalism exhibited by these officers". Robert Breisch, Lt. Jacob Portier and Lt. Thomas MacNeil.

Modley said his decision should not be interpreted as loosening the standards he expects of SEALs. "In my judgment, neither deserves the continued distraction and negative attention that recent events have evoked".

Portier used to be Gallagher's platoon commander and used to be charged with failing to account the killing of the captive.
