  • Greta Thunberg is ready to set sail

NIKKI HENDERSON, 26, the British yacht skipper who is aiding Greta Thunberg sail from the United States to Portugal in order for the 16-year-old activist to attend the COP 25 climate change talks in Madrid (December 2-13) has apparently produced the same amount of carbon emissions the voyage hoped to save by flying to the U.S. from Britain in order to initiate the crossing.

Her spokesperson said Thunberg will arrive in the Portuguese capital Lisbon on Tuesday and hold a news conference there before heading to Spain.

She wants senior officials gathered in Madrid to "finally understand the urgency" of climate change and cooperate internationally.

Thunberg says: "People are underestimating the force of angry kids".

Some 20 activists cut off traffic in central Madrid and staged a brief theatrical performance to protest climate change.

French floods: five dead after three rescue workers killed in helicopter crash

The 16-year-old (pictured below) had travelled to NY by yacht with plans to make her way down to Chile without flying, but had to find a way home when the talks were moved to Madrid because of protests in Santiago.

Her arrival in Lisbon coincides with the release of a bleak report by the Geneva-based World Meteorological Organization, which warns that the past decade is nearly certain to be the hottest yet recorded.

Thunberg was due to be met in Lisbon by local dignitaries and other activists.

Rather than besmirch her status as an environmental activist by taking a carbon emissions-heavy air trip, Thunberg instead set sail on the 14-metre (45-foot) La Vagabonde catamaran on November 13 from Hampton, Virginia to return to Europe.

Levels of greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide hit record levels a year ago, the World Meteorological Organisation has said.

While full-year temperature measurements won't be available for several more months, the agency also said that 2019 is expected to be the second or third warmest year on record.
