  • Iran Says ‘Rioters’ Shot and Killed amid Protests

"The number of people believed to have been killed during demonstrations in Iran that broke out on 15 November has risen to at least 208, based on credible reports received by the organization", said the London-based rights group, adding that the actual death toll was likely higher.

According the Times, it was able to gather testimony and evidence as Iran slowly lifted an nearly complete internet blackout that had been imposed as the protests were brutally crushed. The internet was still off in Mahshahr in Iran's southwest.

Mahshahr is in a region with an ethnic Arab majority with a long history of opposition to the central government.

The guard immediately opened fire on protesters manning one intersection, without giving warning and killed several people, residents said.

Numerous protester then fled to take cover in a nearby marsh, where one of them, armed with a rifle, opened fire on the troops, who responded with machine gun fire, killing dozens, the report said. Demonstrators angered by a 50% increase in government-set gasoline prices blocked traffic in major cities and occasionally clashed with police after a night of demonstrations punctuated by gunfire.

A nurse said numerous wounded had bullet wounds to the head and chest.

He added they were killed "for the mere fact that they're protesting", and he called it a "terrible thing".

After the massacre, a gun battle erupted between the Guards and local residents, many of whom have guns kept for hunting, one witness said.

"In addition to the selective portrayal of destruction of public property, (state-run) Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting should show a few protesters being shot", lawmaker Mahmoud Sadeghi of Tehran wrote sarcastically.

Internet footage also suggested that the Guards deployed tanks in the city.

On Tuesday, Iranian television said those killed included rioters who had attacked sensitive or military centres with firearms or knives or who had taken hostages in some areas.

The authorities have not yet provided any overall death toll for the unrest.

Meanwhile, the relatives of the journalists still in Iran have also been under pressure to force their loved ones to keep away from foreign-based Persian-speaking media.

But Iran's deputy interior minister, Jamal Orf, disputed such figures.

Iran considers incredible the statistics of worldwide organizations on those killed in the recent incidents.

The true figures for the number killed are not clear, "I've seen numbers that vary from as few as a hundred to many times more than that, that have been killed by the Iranian Security Forces", Pompeo concluded.

At least 208 people are believed to have been killed during last month's crackdown on protests in Iran that followed fuel-price hikes, Amnesty International said on December 2. "The United States of America condemns harassment of the reporters and their families, while it continues to take decisive steps toward supporting the freedom of expression and the media".

The demonstrations began after authorities raised minimum gasoline prices by 50% to 15,000 rials per liter.

That shows the widespread economic discontent gripping the country since May 2018, when Trump imposed crushing sanctions after unilaterally withdrawing from Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers.
