  • Former North Central and EWU player Jimmy Lake has been elevated to the head coach position at the University of Washington after Chris Petersen stepped down on Monday

Petersen, Lake and UW Athletic Director Jennifer Cohen will address reporters at a news conference Tuesday morning.

Washington Huskies head coach Chris Peterson has surprisingly stepped down, the school announced today.

I can't remember a more surprising move in Seattle sports. His career record of 146-38 includes eight seasons at Boise State, where he famously led the Broncos to a pair of Fiesta Bowl victories and four top-10 finishes in the AP poll. He previously coached with Petersen at Boise State. The 42-year-old's football upbringing came in Spokane, where he was a student at North Central from 1992-95, as well as a standout athlete on the football field, basketball court and baseball diamond for the Indians. He then went to the Detroit Lions, where in his second season the team hired a young defensive backs coach named Jimmy Lake.

Petersen isn't getting out while the getting was good - he's just getting out, and that is something I just didn't expect. Washington is better for the six years that Petersen spent on campus and college football is worse now that he's leaving. Talented and on-the-rise defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake will replace Peterson. Instead, it's losing him, and I'll close by saying thank you to Petersen for everything he did in rebuilding a program that had bottomed out under Tyrone Willingham and been uneven under Sarkisian. I would have never though that.

Lake, a former safety at Eastern Washington, began his coaching career in 1999.

Lake excelled on the field and away from it during his four seasons at EWU. During six seasons at Washington, Petersen has a 54-26 record, won two Pac-12 titles and took the Huskies to three New Year's Six bowl games, including an appearance in the national semifinals in 2016 and last year the school's first Rose Bowl trip since the 2000 season.

"He's going to speak with authority and he's not just going to say words to hear his voice speak", Kramer said.

"There is no one better suited to assume the reins of our program than Jimmy Lake", Cohen said. Good god, why don't you go into banking and make money?' " Kramer said.

"He does a great job", Best said earlier this year, before the Eagles played the Huskies in Seattle. He's only 55. He will coach in the bowl game for the Huskies. Some of it is certainly the scrutiny that is trained not just on the coaches, but on the players. Lake started his tenure under Petersen as a defensive backs coach. Lake was elevated to defensive coordinator in 2018. "Pete was a big fan of Jimmy's, and he said it would be very beneficial to me to see it". "His energy and ability to relate to our players is unmatched. He is ready to take this step and I have full confidence that he will continue to build on the foundation that has been set here and he will elevate the program to new heights".
