  • Leading figures in the Olympic Movement have condemned Russia doping manipulation at the IOC Summit in Lausanne

The WADA board convened for a special meeting on Monday close to the International Olympic Committee's headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland and ruled unanimously in favour of the global ban.

Wada vice-president Linda Helleland said the ban was "not enough".

Russia's hosting of world championships in Olympic sports also face being stripped after the WADA executive committee approved a full slate of recommended sanctions for tampering with a Moscow laboratory database.

Russian Federation will have 21 days to appeal the huge ban, meaning the legal fallout from the decision is likely to continue over the coming months.

In September 2018, WADA lifted the suspension of the Russian anti-doping agency RUSADA that had been in place for three years on condition that Russia hand over doping data and samples from 2012 to 2015.

An independent investigation launched the following year found evidence of a state-sponsored programme of doping during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics overseen by the Russian Ministry for Sport. The WADA athletes are among a number of athlete groups that say the full ban is what is needed.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) have issued Russian Federation with a four-year blanket ban from worldwide sporting competition, meaning the country will not be able to compete at the World Cup or either of the next two Olympic games.

WADA ruled Russian Federation should be punished for manipulation of laboratory data after the doping scandal that has rocked sport.

If the committee adopts the recommendations, Russian Federation would be denied its flag and anthem at events including the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo and 2022 Winter Games in Beijing - just as they were absent from the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and the past two track-and-field world championships. If it does so, the appeal will be referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).
