Alarm bells have started to ring for Iraq where a series of suspicious events, including unknown assailants machine-gunning protesters in Baghdad and a drone targeting an anti-US cleric, have raised fears of the country slipping deeper into violence and chaos.

An angry mob killed a 16-year-old and strung up the corpse by its feet from a traffic pole after the teen shot and killed six people on Thursday, including four anti-government protesters, Iraqi officials said.

"A decision must be taken to enter the armed forces in the vicinity of Tahrir Square to end the tragic situation that is taking place there under the pretext of demonstrating", Khalaf said.

Earlier, police said protesters, some of whom have accused police of not protecting them from "saboteurs", set fire to the nearby house of the young man.

Video streamed live online showed security forces withdrawing before a crowd dragged a man along the ground while people kicked him.

The protesters stabbed him 17 times, hung him by his ankles from a traffic light pole and cut his throat. On Thursday, witnesses said, he climbed up onto the roof of his house and began shooting in the air with a pistol. The morgue confirmed receiving a body.

Wathba square is located near Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the protest movement, and has been the scene of recent violence.

Mr Weinstein is scheduled to face a January 6 trial in Manhattan on criminal charges of sexually assaulting two women. The settlement still needs court approval and a sign-off by all parties for it to be finalized.

"Security forces have not intervened yet and are awaiting a decision by the competent authorities for fear of collision and friction with the undisciplined elements between these groups", Khalaf said.

Pro-Iran militia leader Qais al Khazali - who was recently targeted by U.S. sanctions - denounced the "chaos" he has warned of since protests began.

Protesters accuse pro-Iran armed factions of playing a role in the killing and abduction of protesters. More than 440 people, mostly unarmed protesters but also some members of the security forces, have been killed since October 1, according to a Reuters tally.

Separately, two rockets were fired at a military base near Baghdad airport housing United States troops, the 10th such attack since late October, the Iraqi army said on Thursday.

A United States defence official said the rocket attacks made the Hashed a bigger security threat to American troops in Iraq than the Daesh militant group which the U.S. has vowed to help Baghdad wipe out.

At a Saraya al-Salam base at Lake Tharthar near Samara, two suicide bombers killed 11 members of the militia, which is loyal to Shi'ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Hashd al-Sha'abi sources have said the USA was allowing Daesh to roam freely under its watch in Iraq's western Anbar province.
