Massive protests rocked three northeastern states of India - Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya over the controversial CAB, following which authorities imposed curfew and suspended mobile internet services.

Reports of violent protests are also pouring in from North 24 Paraganas and Howrah.

People hold placards and shout slogans during a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, a bill that seeks to give citizenship to religious minorities persecuted in neighbouring Muslim countries, in Mumbai, India December 13, 2019.

Canada has asked its citizens to avoid "non-essential travel to the northeast" in view of the ongoing protests.

The UK, France and Israel have also issued a travel advisory for tourists travelling to India amid outrage over CAA.

Earlier, the USA government also warned its citizens against visiting the northeastern states of India due to the ongoing protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

Judge: U.S. Should Recognize American Samoans as Citizens

Indefinite curfew under Tezpur and Dhekiajuli police station areas in Sonitpur district was also relaxed from 0900 hrs to 1700 hrs, Sonitpur Deputy Commissioner Manabendra Pratap Singh said. "Respect for religious freedom and equal treatment under the law are fundamental principles of our two democracies".

Activists say the new law violates the country's Constitution and secular standards, and human rights observers internationally have expressed concern that it will have a discriminatory effect against Muslims in the country.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government says the new law will save religious minorities such as Hindus and Christians from persecution in neighboring Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan by opening a path to Indian citizenship.

Congress leader T N Prathapan on Saturday knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court challenging the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. The cut-off date is December 31, 2014.

Unrest has gripped India's northeast against the bill. People in the northeastern states fear granting of citizenship to immigrants would endanger their status.
