Venice is underwater after a new surge of waters hit the city, ruining tourists' plans and causing extensive damaged to some of the world's most storied streets and landmarks.

Tourists could be seen carrying their suitcases aloft and wading through water in the Italian city's famous St Mark's square after an "exceptional" 1.44m (4ft 9ins) peak tide this morning. This did not even happen after the attacks on the Twin Towers, ' talked about Vittorio Bonacini, chief of the Association of Venetian Hoteliers all over a press convention. Many times the high water level has exceeded 1.5 metres.

He added: "An exceptional tide of 140 centimetres corresponds to about 60 cm of water in the lowest points of the city, such as Piazza San Marco, and consequently floods about 54 percent of the historic centre".

November's flooding is estimated to have caused around 1 billion euros' worth of damage, and severely affected its tourism industry.

"I've been living here for more than 50 years and never seen anything like that", said Toto Bergamo Rossi, director of the cultural foundation Venetian Heritage.

He also said the historic high tide lasted only an hour and a half, before the situation normalised within in a few hours.

Another high tide has hit Venice, just a month after the old city was devastated by its worst flooding in half a century.

Venice's mayor reportedly said that the unusually high waters have cost around €1 billion ($1.1 billion) in damage to homes, businesses, and landmarks.

Officials at the local office that monitors high tides said recent events indicate an increase in their frequency.

The lagoon metropolis is quiet counting the wound precipitated by the 1.87-meter-excessive tide on November 12, the top in more than 50 years.
