Mourners packed the streets of Tehran early on Monday for ceremonies to pay homage to top Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani, after he was killed in a United States strike in Baghdad.

People gathered in Tehran on Monday to mourn top general Qassem Soleimani, as his replacement vowed to take revenge for the U.S. airstrike that killed him, and U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to hit Iranian cultural site if Iran does retaliate. Baghdad has condemned the strike as a violation of Iraqi sovereignty, protesting the use of its territory by the U.S. for attacks on other countries.

Trump responded on Saturday by warning that the United States was targeting 52 sites in Iran and would hit them "very fast and very hard" if the Islamic republic attacks American personnel or assets.

On Monday morning, massive crowds of people held a farewell ceremony for Lieutenant-General Qasem Soleimani and his martyred companions in downtown Tehran.

Iran has announced the cancellation of nationwide funeral processions honoring major general Qasem Soleimani, who was assassinated Friday on orders of president Donald Trump, after millions showed-up to mourn and praise him in the cities of Ahvaz in the southwest and Mashhad in the northeast.

In the weeks before Soleimani's death, there was widespread civil unrest against the government with estimates that at least 400 people were killed.

The twin threats came as Iran announced it was further reducing compliance with a tattered worldwide nuclear accord, ending limitations on numbers of centrifuges used to enrich uranium. The Iraqi parliament has called on the exit of American troops from the country.

"I really worry that the actions the president took will get us into what he calls another endless war in the Middle East".

Former Vice President Joe Biden said Trump was ill-prepared for the repercussions of the strike on Soleimani and had alienated allies by not alerting them of the plans. And it did not back off from earlier promises that it wouldn't seek a nuclear weapon. However, Iran said that its cooperation with the IAEA "will continue as before".

Soleimani, 62, spearheaded Iranian military operations in the Middle East, and was regarded as a terrorist by the US.

He doubled down on that threat Sunday, dismissing warnings that targeting cultural sites could be a war crime under global law. "It doesn't work that way", Trump said.

There have been emotional rallies attended by thousands of people in both Baghdad and Tehran calling for retaliation on the USA for Soleimani's assassination.

"The US informed us that a number of bombings of Hashed al-Shaabi sites in Iraq in the summer of 2019 were carried out by Israel", Mahdi said, according to Channel 13. Not even Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who founded the Islamic Republic, received such a processional with his death in 1989.

He will be buried in his hometown of Kerman.
