Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement on Sunday that Iran knew right from the start what had happened, but tried to cover it up. Some online videos purported to show police firing tear gas sporadically, though there was no immediate wholesale crackdown on demonstrators.

Protesters were also filmed on Sunday chanting "Death to the dictator", referring to Khameini.

Another video shows a woman being carried away from the protests, while people around her call out that she has been shot in the leg by live ammunition.

"Oh my God, she's bleeding nonstop!" one person shouts. Another shouts: "Bandage it!"

Images emerged from the previous two days of protests showing wounded people being carried and pools of blood on the ground, while the sound of gunfire could be heard.

Other posts showed police in riot gear hitting protesters with batons on the street, the agency said.

He also praised Revolutionary Guards Aerospace Commander Brig-Gen Amir Ali Hajizadeh for his "honest" and "bold" acknowledgement that his forces were responsible for the tragedy.

Tehran has acknowledged shooting down the Ukrainian jetliner in error, killing 176 people, hours after it had fired at US bases to retaliate for the killing of Iran's most powerful military leader in a drone strike ordered by Trump.

Iranian public anger, rumbling for days as Iran repeatedly denied it was to blame for January 8's plane crash, erupted into protests on Saturday when the military admitted it. Demonstrators turned out again on January 12.

Iran retaliated on Wednesday by firing missiles at Iraqi bases where US troops were stationed, but did not kill any Americans. But no retaliation came.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) accepted full responsibility for the downing of the Ukrainian plane. Fifty-seven of them were from the country.

"There are those who fully support a regime change in Tehran and hope this ongoing protest movement will turn into something bigger", he said.

"I am of course outraged and furious that families across this country are grieving the loss of their loved ones", he said.

"Denying and covering up the truth in the past three days has greatly increased the suffering and pain of families and mine", she added.

Another person, who only identified himself as Saeed, said that the largely state-owned Iranian media hid the cause of the crash for "political reasons".

Some Iranian artists, including famous director Masoud Kimiai, have withdrawn from an upcoming worldwide film festival. Two state TV hosts resigned in protest over the false reporting about the cause of the plane crash.

Iranian security forces deployed to the demonstration fired tear gas and rubber bullets against protesters as well as live ammunition despite US President Donald Trump urging Tehran "do not kill your protesters". He later tweeted the same message again in Farsi.

The most important to say is that if anyone blames the USA for the accident, they most definitely are not alone.

Iranians demonstrated in November after the government raised gas prices and protested widely across the country. The government shut down internet access for days, making it hard to gauge the scale of the protests and the subsequent crackdown. "And the people of Iran are just fed up with it", he said on ABC's "This Week".

After Iran's January 11 admission, protests broke out in Tehran and other cities, with demonstrators chanting slogans against the Iranian leadership and reports of clashes with police. Protests were also held in the city of Isfahan and elsewhere.

Demonstrations at home - some apparently met by a violent crackdown - have become the latest outcome of one of the most destabilizing escalations between the United States and Iran since the Iranian revolution of 1979.

"Can confirm that I didn't take part in demonstrations!"

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said Rob Macaire was detained after attending a vigil where he was paying respects to victims of the crash, some of whom were British.

They will also pay attention to how the victims of the air crash are treated by the Iranian elite.

Britain, meanwhile, has condemned the arrest of the United Kingdom ambassador to Iran in Tehran as a "flagrant violation of global law".
