  • Renault Chairman Says Alliance With Nissan 'Robust'

Nissan executives are making contingency plans for separating from Renault, Automotive News Europe quoted the Financial Times as saying.

Citing several sources with knowledge of the matter, the Financial Times report that Nissan's plan involves a complete split in engineering and manufacturing from Renault, as well as new changes to the Japanese automaker's board.

Renault shares hit six-year lows on Monday after a media report that Nissan has accelerated secret contingency planning for a potential split from the French carmaker, the latest sign that the downfall of former boss Carlos Ghosn is roiling the 20-year alliance. This has reportedly accelerated since Ghosn fled charges of financial misconduct in Japan late a year ago. Many executives at the Japanese firm believe that Renault is a drag on its success.

She said, "Most people want to connect in this romance thing, and that's just because they don't have the story". It was him too, ' she said. "You know, he wasn't going to speak to me if I wasn't going to speak to him".

A split would likely result in both makers forging partnerships elsewhere in order to maintain competitiveness in the face of rising research and development costs and falling sales. Renault's chairman, Jean-Dominique Senard, who replaced Ghosn at the position after his arrest, is expected to present several combined projects created to boost faith in the future of the alliance. However, people within Nissan claim that his efforts to present unification have badly misread the general mood of workers.

Ghosn is widely credited for saving Nissan from collapse when the company was on the verge of bankruptcy almost two decades ago, and stood behind the creation of the Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi alliance. Nissan's decision to split would mark the end of almost two decades of co-operation. Both SUVs also share the same engine options.
