  • The Australian Wildfires Are About Arsonists – Not Climate Change

NASA Astronaut Christina Koch, a MI native now aboard the International Space Station, shared three photos of the burning country to social media on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

The smoke from Australia's fires is so vast that fumes from the early weeks of the crisis will survive a journey around the globe and are expected to return to the country's skies from the west, according to Nasa. "Our hearts and thoughts are with you".

Twitter user Roman replied to the post: "Very sad".

Daniel Wright said: "The devastation to wildlife has been unimaginable ... most heartbreaking is the koala bears #SaveTheKoala".

The photo of the effects of the natural disaster was captured from space by Luca Parmitano, an astronaut from the European Space Agency. "These reflective bands can also be used to show the "height" of clouds since clouds lower to the ground appear whiter and clouds higher in the atmosphere appear bluer to aqua since the ice crystals within the clouds reflect a blue colour using this instrument".

Other images from the ISS astronaut showed thick dust streaming over the ocean near Australia.

Mr Parmitano said in another tweet: "Australia fires: lives, hopes, dreams in ashes".

The Australian fires have killed at least 27 people since September previous year, while the inferno is now spewing unsafe smog around major Australian cities. NASA is tracking smoke spreading around the globe, which Parmitano could easily see from space.

As of January 8, NASA stated that this risky smoke had already made it halfway around the world.

"Once in the stratosphere, the smoke can travel thousands of miles from its source, affecting atmospheric conditions globally", Nasa said.

A NASA Earth Observatory blog post revealed different types of clouds are accompanying the fire smoke plumes, such as pyrocumulonimbus and flammagenitus.

Dr Matthew Jones, Senior Research Associate at UEA's Tyndall Centre and lead author of the review, said: "Overall, the 57 papers reviewed clearly show human-induced warming has already led to a global increase in the frequency and severity of fire weather, increasing the risks of wildfire". "As the hot air rises and spreads out, it cools, causing water vapor to condense and form clouds".
