  • Pope appoints woman to senior diplomatic role

The Vatican announced that within the Vatican Secretariat of State's Section for Relations with States, Di Giovanni will head the multilateral sector, which deals with intergovernmental organisations and multilateral treaties.

She said she was surprised by the appointment, as she "never would have thought the Holy Father would have entrusted this role to me".

Di Giovanni has worked in the multilateral sector, focusing on migrant and refugee issues in the office and specializing in global humanitarian law, communication, private worldwide law, intellectual property and tourism.

For the first time in history, the pope has appointed a woman to serve as a manager at the State Secretariat of the Vatican - with Francesca Di Giovanni, a 27-year-old lawyer in the Catholic Church, for the post. "I will try my best to live up to his trust".

"The Holy Father has made an unprecedented decision, certainly, which, beyond myself personally, represents an indication of an attention towards women", Di Giovanni said, according to the news site. She is pictured in an undated photo with Pope Francis.

Di Giovanni, 66, told the Vatican's in-house media that Francis' appointment showed his attention to women, and she agreed with the pope's oft-stated assertion that women have certain aptitudes as peace-makers, mediators and healers.

As the first woman to hold a managerial position within the Vatican Secretariat of State, Di Giovanni said she hopes her role will "contribute to the realisation of the Holy Father's vision" of women being "fully included in decision-making processes". Another woman, Cristiane Murray, was chosen as her replacement. "Because when women can share their gifts, the world finds itself more united, more peaceful". But the Secretariat of State is the most powerful Vatican office, coordinating the internal work of the Holy See bureaucracy as well as the Vatican's diplomatic relations with other countries. "It is important to emphasise the Pope's attention to the multilateral sector, questioned today by some, but which has a fundamental function in the worldwide community".

"Every step forward for women, is a step forward for humanity as a whole", he said.
