Chinese New Year event in Ottawa cancelled as coronavirus concern spreads

Health officials in China say a coronavirus has killed 15 more people in the province of Hubei, where the outbreak first started.
More than 1,300 people have been infected globally with a virus traced to a seafood market in the central city of Wuhan that was illegally selling wildlife.
The coronavirus, first identified in December 2019, originated in the city of Wuhan, China.
About two dozen cases in all have been confirmed outside mainland China, almost all of them in Asia: Hong Kong, Macao, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, Nepal, Australia and Malaysia.
The province borders Russian Federation and is more than 2,000 kilometres (1,200 miles) from Wuhan.
In Jingzhou, a city just west of Wuhan also under lockdown, Wang Xin, visiting for the new year holiday from Shenzhen, told the Guardian that he was about to leave the city but started to feel sick on Friday and has now been told to isolate himself at home for 14 days.
Wuhan officials said they are rapidly constructing a new 1,000-bed hospital to deal with the crisis, to be completed February 3.
Health officials are carrying out medical tests for the new coronavirus strain on patients who have recently returned from Wuhan, China, in Alameda County, California, and Brazos County, Texas.
France today has confirmed its first two cases of the virus, with one patient being hospitalised in Paris and the other in the southwestern city of Bordeaux.
China said 41 people have now died from a new coronavirus that has infected more than 1,300 people globally, as health authorities around the world scramble to prevent a global pandemic. Symptoms include cough and fever and in more severe cases shortness of breath and pneumonia, which can be fatal.

"While the available information suggests a low immediate health risk for the general public, we consider any new infectious disease a serious concern and we are taking precautions", the state Health Department said in a statement released Friday morning.
In addition, ten confirmed cases had been reported in Hong Kong and Macau special administrative regions and Taiwan, with five in Hong Kong, two in Macau and three in Taiwan.
