The party campaigned on a mandate for Scottish independence.

According to YouGov, the shift towards independence comes from Remainers in Scotland moving towards Yes.

The survey shows that 21% of those who voted Remain in 2016 but No in the 2014 independence referendum have now moved over to the Yes side.

A majority are also against a referendum next year, even if the SNP win the Scottish parliament elections in May 2021.

The Scottish Parliament voted 64 to 54 on January 29 to hold a new referendum on Scottish Independence later in 2020, with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon arguing that Scotland "has the right to choose its own future". "I know not everyone agrees with my position on independence, but I'm happy to have that debate and let Scotland decide", Sturgeon said.

Sturgeon and the SNP argue that Brexit has changed the "material circumstances" of Scotland's relationship with the rest of the United Kingdom, because of its majority vote to remain in the EU.

She accused United Kingdom ministers of being "completely deaf to Scotland's interests, needs and voice", adding that their vision for the United Kingdom is driven by "jingoism and xenophobia".

She said a non-binding referendum could gauge the appetite for an independent Scotland.

"We need to find the way to make sure it's legal and legitimate".
