  • Kentucky guard Ashton Hagans grabs a loose ball during the Wildcats 77-64 win at Tennessee last weekend in Knoxville. Kentucky takes on Vanderbilt Tuesday night in Nashville

The No. 12 Wildcats trailed 36-27 at halftime but used a 24-4 run as part of a 51-point second half in pulling away for a 78-64 win over upset-minded Vanderbilt.

Kentucky coach John Calipari watched his Wildcats fall behind by as many as 14 points in the first half and enter the locker room down with their biggest deficit of the season on the road at Vanderbilt.

"The whole point of this is them learning about themselves", Calipari said. "If that happens, you're going to be behind".

That would not carry over to the second half.

Kentucky has won the last seven games between the two foes and has won three straight at Memorial Gym. "We gotta come in with a focus and a mindset to attack and be aggressive and we should do fine".

Lee led the Commodores with 21 points on 8-for-13 shooting and was one of four players to score in double figures. Quickley followed with 18, including back-to-back 3-pointers with under four minutes remaining to help lock down the victory. Hagans flirted with what would have been the fourth triple-double in the Cats' storied history, recording 11 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists.

"He was real calm", Hagans said of Calipari. Nick Richards accounted for 15 points and seven rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Ejike Obinna tied a season high with 12 points and freshman Jordan Wright tied a career high with 11 points. Saben Lee paced Vanderbilt with 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting including 1-of-2 from 3-point distance plus 7-of-8 at the charity stripe. It was the first Vanderbilt duo to score 30 or more points in a game since Jeff Fosnes (39) and Butch Feher (34) vs. Jacksonville on 12.21.74.

In this Cats Illustrated "Rapid Recap" feature, we touch on some quick-hitters from the United Kingdom victory... The scoring differential is bad and reflects that the Commodores have not been within reach of their conference foes in the second half of games.

Defensive intensity in the first half. Vanderbilt blitzed the Cats with eight 3-pointers in the first period, building a 36-27 lead at halftime.

Kentucky: The Wildcats came in second in the SEC and 15th in the country defending against the 3, allowing opponents to shoot almost 29% outside the arc. Fortunately, the Dores were not able to capitalize on it. Kentucky now grabs an average of 37 rebounds a game, compared to Vanderbilt's 32. He's taken some pointed criticism from United Kingdom head coach John Calipari of late, so it was good to see him respond. He also added six steals, the most by a Commodore since Dan Cage had six steals vs. Furman on November 28, 2006.

Considered a contender to be the team's point guard last season, Quickley lost the battle to Hagans and ended up playing off the ball.
