Furthermore, the IEA will sponsor two major studies ahead of the summit; World Energy Outlook Special Report will work out on how to curb global energy-related carbon emissions by one-third by 2030.

Despite the continued implementation of President Trump's policy agenda, which has been repeatedly and widely criticised by green groups across the world, the USA recorded the largest emissions decline on a country basis between 2018 and 2019.

Following two years of increasing emissions, Carbon dioxide emissions flattened to 33 gigatonnes thanks to the growing role of renewable resources in electricity generation in advanced economies in 2019, according to the International Atomic Agency (IEA). The report doesn't include greenhouse-gas emissions from other sources like agriculture, land-use changes, or wildfires, which could otherwise affect the totals. Natural gas produced more electricity than coal for the first time ever, meanwhile wind-powered electricity almost caught up with coal-fired electricity.

The latest data prompted surprise from IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol, as well as cautious optimism that global emissions may have finally reached their peak.

The flatlining of emissions can be largely explained by the increased use of sustainable energy resources in the advanced economies of Europe and the USA, which offset an increase in emissions in the rest of the world. The US, for example, hit some of the biggest emissions drops of any country, cutting by 140 million tonnes.

However, even if we're well-aware of all those facts, the global emissions have continued to increase/yearly.

Meanwhile, energy emissions in the European Union fell by five per cent a year ago - equating to nearly 160 million tonnes - with natural gas generating more electricity than coal for the first time ever, just ahead of wind power generation which was nearly on a par with coal.

Japan's emissions fell by 45 million tonnes, or around 4 per cent, as output from recently restarted nuclear reactors increased.

Despite the general decline in carbon emissions in advanced economies in Europe and the US, however, carbon emissions grew by almost 400 million tons in the rest of the world in 2019, with almost 80% of the increase coming from Asia, where countries increased their use of coal.

"Today's IEA report on global emissions is proof positive that innovation and technology are the solution to the world's climate challenges", U.S. Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette said in a statement Tuesday. This calls for a grand coalition that brings together all the stakeholders that have a genuine commitment to reducing emissions - governments, industry, financial institutions, global organizations and civil society.

"We commend Dominion for setting a net-zero target that covers both the electricity and natural gas sides of its business", said Lila Holzman, Energy Program Manager of As You Sow.
