US Senate to limit Trumps Iran war powers after Soleimani attack

The US Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the power to declare war. "Don't let it happen!"

"It is very important for our Country's SECURITY that the United States Senate not vote for the Iran War Powers Resolution", Trump said in a tweet sent shortly before the vote.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, however, argued on Tuesday that passage in the House and Senate will send a warning to the White House, even if the President vetoes the measure.

Answering a claim by some of Trump's supporters - and Trump himself - that the measure sends a signal of weakness to Iran and other potential adversaries, Kaine said the opposite was true. "We should not be at war with Iran, unless Congress votes to authorize such a war".

The Senate on Wednesday debated and avanced the measure-introduced last month by Sen.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) has opposed the resolution, arguing it "would severely limit the U.S. military's operational flexibility to defend itself against threats posed by Iran".

On Wednesday, McConnell called Democrat Sen.

Tehran responded to the USA attack on Soleimani by launching missiles at two military bases in Iraq that house American troops. Senators Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) share the sentiment, and have said they would vote for Kaine's resolution once it comes up in the Senate. The attack caused traumatic brain injuries in at least 64 US soldiers, the Pentagon said. The prospect of military action against Iran has consequences that ought to be considered by the full Congress on behalf of the people it represents.

In January, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi acknowledged Soleimani was a bad person, while stressing the importance of congressional debate over war powers.

"This discrete and limited exercise of American power pales in comparison to the ways in which past presidents of both parties have routinely used presidential authorities to utilize our military might without prior consent of Congress", he continued.

The Senate is scheduled to hold a full vote on the measure this Thursday, but appears to lack the two-thirds majority needed to override an expected veto by the president.

What they're saying: The White House argues the bill "fails to account for present reality", since it was introduced on January 9 "in response to an escalating series of attacks" by Iran.

"The Constitution, in Article I, provides Congress the power to declare war - a responsibility I take seriously. Let's defeat this misguided resolution", he added.

Once the resolution clears the Senate, it will head to the House where it is expected to pass.

Senate action on the war powers resolution follows a number of votes in the House of Representatives aimed at addressing rising tensions with Iran.
