  • Labor announces net zero emissions goal by 2050

Political debate over climate change and emissions reductions has engulfed parliament this week after Labor announced its policy for net zero emissions by 2050.

"That will be determined by the market and by global agreement".

He said Labor's plan is an economy-wide target that would bring in both transport and agriculture.

"Climate change is real and needs a real response".

"Global economists predict that the cost of a greater than 2C increase in global temperatures will be between 15 and 25% lower economic growth - a greater cost than we saw during the great depression".

The government is also counting, in its 2030 plan, a 367-megatonne contribution from carryover credits - an accounting system that allows countries to count carbon credits from exceeding their targets under the soon-to-be-obsolete Kyoto protocol periods against their Paris commitment for 2030.

"We don't believe that is necessary", Mr Albanese said.

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann described Mr Albanese's emissions target as "reckless and irresponsible", copying the approach of his predecessor Bill Shorten at the last election, where he put forward targets without any costings or assessment of the impact on jobs and electricity prices.

The justification of the policy by Mr Albanese and the "other members of extinction rebellion" is that the cost on inaction is "apparently more expensive".

Former Liberal prime minister Malcolm Turnbull took to Twitter to weigh in on a topic that lost him his party's leadership.

He said the bottom line is if net zero emissions is not achieved by 2050 "the planet will be uninhabitable for billions of people".

"Cheapest, cleanest form of energy today is renewables plus storage and is getting cheaper. Couple that with electrification of industry as well as green hydrogen", he tweeted.
