President Trump: Coronavirus 'under control' in US

  • South Korea has seen a rapid surge in the number of coronavirus cases

"That President Trump is trying to steal funds dedicated to fight Ebola - which is still considered an epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo - is indicative of his towering incompetence and further proof that he and his administration aren't taking the coronavirus crisis as seriously as they need to be", Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement.

Democratic leadership criticized the president's request as "anemic" and inadequate.

The funding request was released Monday evening and came as key government accounts were running low.

"It seems to me at the outset that this request for the money, the supplemental, is lowballing it, possibly, and you can't afford to do that", Shelby told Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar during a hearing on the agency's budget request.

'Of course not, or we wouldn't be asking for a supplemental [appropriations budget],' Azar snapped back.

We are also freeing up existing resources and allowing for greater flexibilities for response activities.

The administration is requesting $1.25 billion in new funding and wants to transfer $535 million more in funding from an Ebola preparedness account that's been a top priority of Democrats. It anticipates shifting money from other HHS accounts and other agencies to complete the $2.5 billion response plan. Senators returning to Washington after a weeklong recess will receive a classified briefing Tuesday morning on the government's coronavirus response, a Senate aide said.

House Democrats also said that the administration took too long to request funding.

All of the warning lights are flashing bright red.

The broadsides from lawmakers came against the backdrop of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issuing a warning for the country to prepare for an outbreak of cases in the USA, and another hard day on Wall Street, where the Dow Jones Industrial Index lost 879 points.

The Trump campaign is ramping up its efforts to court black voters, with plans to open up retail style community centers in several predominantly black cities in battleground states - to pitch voters on the president's record with the black community.

Trump predicted in a tweet earlier this month that Chinese language President Xi Jinping could be "profitable" in quelling the unfold of the virus.

Separately, problems with a test developed by the CDC has delayed the ability of state and local health departments to test patients for the coronavirus.

Azar was testifying in part to defend the $2.5 billion emergency budget request that the White House submitted to Congress Monday night to address the coronavirus outbreak, but the dubious committee suggested the funding is too little, too late.

She said that Azar told Congress at beginning of outbreak in China that he would inform Congress when health authorities needed more money.

Azar defended the administration's response Tuesday, arguing it has "aggressively" moved to contain the coronavirus by banning foreign nationals from entering the country if they had recently traveled in China.

Iran, Italy and South Korea all reported new confirmed cases.

Global stock markets have slumped in recent days due to worries over a prolonged disruption to supply chains and economies from the disease, which has infected about 80,000 people and killed almost 3,000, mostly in China.

In an interview broadcast on CNBC, Director of the National Economic Council Larry Kudlow replied "yes, we can", when asked if the United States could continue growing should a recession hit the rest of the world.
