  • Johnny Depp appears in UK court for libel case

Depp is in court in London for a preliminary hearing in his libel suit against British newspaper The Sun over an article that alleged Depp had been abusive to Heard.

He is suing the newspaper over a 2018 article in which they wrote that he had abused his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, reports AFP. "Heard" let alone 'I hit her on numerous occasions.'" The statement referred to the recently released tape that claimed Heard admitting to "hitting" Depp.

According to Page Six, several text messages alleged to be sent from Johnny Depp to Paul Bettany in 2013-2014 were read aloud in court today as part of the pre-trial review for The Sun libel case.

"The Sun's article contains serious and criminal accusations against Mr Depp; that he beat his wife and caused her significant injury".

The couple settled their divorce out of court in 2017, with Ms Heard donating her seven million United States dollar (£5.5 million) settlement to charity.

He added that, in the recordings, Ms Heard is apparently heard to say that no one would believe Mr Depp if he claimed to be a victim of domestic violence. Another message read, "Let's drown her before we burn her!"

New video and audio evidence are also being submitted to disprove claims that he beat Heard.

His lawyer David Sherborne told the court he had evidence that "diametrically opposed" claims in the article. "Mr Depp is looking forward to his day in court".

The High Court was told that Depp is producing 17 witnesses to prove that he is innocent, including testimony from two Los Angeles police officers. A few weeks ago, news broke out that Heard had also been abusive during their marriage.

The 55-year-old denies the allegations of domestic abuse and has accused Ms Heard of being the "aggressor" in their relationship, which ended in May 2016. One person, one side, is lying, and one is not. "Heard [who is lying], Mr. Depp is 100 per cent clear about that".

After reading out the messages, Wolanski said, "These texts go to the very heart of the case, they are really very important and set out the claimant's thinking in respect of a number of different incidents and his recollection".

"Powders... half a bottle of whiskey, a thousand red bull and vodkas, pills, 2 bottles of Champers on plane", was used by the Sun's attorney Adam Wolanski as corroborating evidence for an event in which Heard alleges that Depp kicked her and threw a boot at her before passing out on a toilet.

A few of these messages were sent to actor Paul Bettany in 2013. I will f**k her burnt corpse to make sure she is dead'.

Mr Depp has brought separate libel proceedings against Ms Heard in the U.S., which Mr Sherborne said are "ongoing". The actor has denied the claims.

Depp is also suing his former wife in the USA for $50 million over an article she wrote in The Washington Post about being a victim of domestic violence.
