But, while their performance is likewise down from the heady levels of past year when, as first predicted by Insideworldfootball, they became the first football club in history to report an annual pre-tax profit of over £100 million, Liverpool continue to purr along rather nicely off the field as well as on.

Liverpool signed a host of players in the summer of 2018 - including Naby Keita, Alisson Becker, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri.

The Reds are on course to break several records this term and the Watford manager feels winning the Premier League could be the first of many league titles for the Merseyside club.

Premier League leaders Liverpool announced on Thursday a pre-tax profit of 42 million pounds ($54.57 million) and increased turnover of 533 million pounds for last season's Champions League-winning campaign.

This season, they have also won the Club World Championship and are still in both the FA Cup and Champions League.

Liverpool, who became champions of Europe for the sixth time last June, are seventh in the Deloitte Football Money League, a rise of two places from the previous financial year. This is barely one-third of the previous year's startling £125 million figure; but it is comfortably the highest 2018-19 profit declared among the 10 top-tier English clubs who have so far reported.

Andy Hughes, chief operating officer, said: "What we are seeing is sustained growth across all areas of the club, which is aligned to the recent performance on the pitch".

"The cost of football, however, does continue to rise in transfers and associated fees but what's critical for us is the consistency of our financial position, enabling us to live within our means and continue to run a sustainable football club", Hughes added.

Nine new commercial partners joined the club, including its first official training partnership with AXA. They also plan to expand their stadium capacity by rebuilding the Anfield Road stand.

During the period the club invested £50m in a new training ground.
