MADRID (AP) - The Spanish government has canceled the participation of tenor Plácido Domingo in Madrid's La Zarzuela light opera theater in May in light of the latest developments in the sexual misconduct allegations against the legendary singer.

In his latest message, Domingo said, "My apology was honest and heartfelt, to any colleague who I have made to feel uncomfortable, or hurt in any manner, by anything I have said or done, but I know what I have not done and I'll deny it again".

His statement on Thursday added: "My apology was honest and from the bottom of my heart to any colleagues whom I could have hurt in any way by something I said or did".

The artists labor union launched their investigation in September, a few weeks after The Associated Press reported a series of allegations of workplace sexual harassment against Domingo.

After accusations surfaced, Placido Domingo stepped down as general director of the Los Angeles Opera.

The union representing opera performers, choral singers and dancers says that according to an independent investigation it commissioned, opera megastar Plácido Domingo engaged in "inappropriate activity" with women both "in and out of the workplace".

The embattled opera legend on Thursday walked back his apology to the dozens of women accusing him of sexual misconduct - just two days after saying he accepted "full responsibility".

One of the most feted and powerful opera stars of the modern era, Domingo said in a statement he had spent several months reflecting on the allegations made by his musical colleagues. It continued: "Many of the witnesses expressed fear of retaliation in the industry as their reason for not coming forward sooner".

It said Domingo had frequently pressured women into sexual relationships, and sometimes professionally punished those who rejected him.

AGMA said in its statement that more details about the coalition will be released in coming weeks as the potential partners, which could include "several other major USA opera companies", work on an appropriate approach.

'While that was never my intention, no one should ever be made to feel that way.

A statement from the Teatro Real in Madrid said that Domingo himself had taken the step of canceling his part in the upcoming "La Traviata", with five shows scheduled in May, ahead of a meeting on Thursday in which the venue's patrons were to decide on his case.

Reports have painted a portrait of a man who acted with impunity, shielded by his power as one of opera's foremost stars. "It is my fervent wish that the result will be a safer place to work for all in the opera industry, and I hope that my example moving forward will encourage others to follow". Domingo took to singing baritone roles later in his career.

"This will ensure that artists feel respected and empowered to address sexual harassment and related issues going forward", said AGMA's National Executive Director Leonard Egert.

"The anticipated fine, to our knowledge the largest to be imposed on a union member, was NOT in exchange for AGMA's silence or to make any "secret deal", the guild said in a statement posted to its website, adding, "The potential fine was part of a series of proposed measures to resolve potential internal union discipline which included: a lengthy suspension; mandatory training/coaching; and a honest public apology".
