Des hordes d'émeutiers nationalistes hindous, armés de bâtons, de sabres et même d'armes à feu investissaient des quartiers populaires du nord-est de la capitale indienne, à majorité musulmane pour y commettre impunément leurs méfaits pour ne pas les qualifier de crimes.

Le principal hôpital de la zone avait recensé 20 décès à la date de mercredi matin.

Tandis que l'Eglise d'Inde a apporté son soutien aux communautés musulmanes touchées, l'Organisation de la coopération islamique (OCI) a condamné "la violence récente et alarmante visant les musulmans d'Inde, qui a entraîné la mort et des blessures de personnes innocentes ainsi que l'incendie et le vandalisme de mosquées et de propriétés appartenant à des musulmans ".

Plusieurs mosquées ont été brûlées dans la zone. Une équipe de l'AFP a fait face à des réactions extrêmement hostiles de la part d'habitants. Au moins 32 personnes, hindoues et musulmanes, ont perdu la vie, avant les premières arrestations et le déploiement tardif, mercredi, des forces de sécurité.
