Amazon told all 798,000 of its employees on Friday to avoid "non-essential travel" - both within the U.S. and internationally - due to concerns about the coronavirus disease, Covid-19, a spokesperson for the company confirmed to Business Insider.
Reuters and The New York Times reported that Amazon senior vice president Dave Clark told his worldwide operations group Thursday not to travel "until further notice", adding that no meetings employees would have to travel to should be planned for at least another two months.
Earlier on Friday, The New York Times reported that employees on Amazon's worldwide operations team, which oversees much of the company's technology and logistics globally, were given the travel guidance, due to concerns of exposure to Covid-19. The company announced today it would also be backing out of the San Diego-based Game Developers Conference, following Sony, Microsoft, Facebook, and others' decision to do the same for health and safety reasons. With this broader halt of employee work trips, it was not immediately clear how the company distinguished essential from non-essential travel. Amazon also has indicated that its supply chain could be impacted, emailing sellers earlier this week to ask if they anticipated inventory issues.
