Coronavirus: Killer disease hit Nigeria, 12 other countries in 48 hours

"The case which was confirmed on Thursday, February 27, is the first case to be reported in Nigeria since the beginning of the outbreak in China in January 2020", Osagie Enahire the Health Minister said in a statement. He returned from Milan to Lagos on 25 February.

"This means Nigeria is free of Coronavirus", the Director, Emergency Preparedness and Response, NCDC, Dr John Oladejo said.

She said further that epidemiologists and infectious disease consultants are already handling the situation in collaboration with the Lagos State Government and federal government.

Nigeria's economic hub Lagos confirmed a case of new coronavirus on Friday, stirring memories of the fears sparked six years ago when West Africa's Ebola epidemic hit the chaotic megacity of 20 million. African countries could be particularly vulnerable to the disease because of fragile health systems, porous borders and close links to China.

British Airways parent IAG said it was expecting "weaker demand" as a result of the virus, and no-frills carrier EasyJet said it would have to cancel some flights - particularly into and out of Italy.

As of Friday, confirmed cases in Japan had risen above 200, with four deaths, excluding more than 700 cases on a quarantined cruise liner, Diamond Princess. They are "in good care" under treatment in Japan, the institute said.
