"The case which was confirmed on Thursday, February 27, is the first case to be reported in Nigeria since the beginning of the outbreak in China in January 2020", Osagie Enahire the Health Minister said in a statement. He returned from Milan to Lagos on 25 February.

He was said to have spent the night in a hotel around the airport area before leaving for business in Ogun State on Tuesday morning.

"This means Nigeria is free of Coronavirus", the Director, Emergency Preparedness and Response, NCDC, Dr John Oladejo said.

She said further that epidemiologists and infectious disease consultants are already handling the situation in collaboration with the Lagos State Government and federal government.

Nigeria's economic hub Lagos confirmed a case of new coronavirus on Friday, stirring memories of the fears sparked six years ago when West Africa's Ebola epidemic hit the chaotic megacity of 20 million. African countries could be particularly vulnerable to the disease because of fragile health systems, porous borders and close links to China.

British Airways parent IAG said it was expecting "weaker demand" as a result of the virus, and no-frills carrier EasyJet said it would have to cancel some flights - particularly into and out of Italy.

But infections elsewhere have started to surge, with Iran, Italy and South Korea becoming the major new hotspots and cases being confirmed in around 50 countries. The countries were seen as high priority due to their large volume of travel to and from China.

Also, we have sent a team from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to support the state. "The patient is quite responsive and able to recall his interactions".

Meanwhile, the permanent secretary, ministry of health, Abdulaziz Abdullahi, said the government, in preparation for surveillance and response to an eventual outbreak of Covid-19 in the country, has released N386 million to two health agencies.
