Among the major new-car unveilings that were scheduled for the 90th edition of one of the world's major auto show was the 8th-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI, Citroen's electric Ami, the Apex AP-0 concept vehicle, the 2-seat Bentley Mulliner Bacalar, the Pininfarina Battista, the high-performance Hispano Suiza Carmen Boulogne, the new Skoda Octavia, the DS Aero Sport Lounge, the Rinspeed MetroSnap, the Czinger 21C hypercar, and many others.

Previous year 660,000 people attended the Geneva show and the exhibition generated an estimated 200-250 million Swiss francs ($205-$256 million) worth of business.

We all love cars and are anxious to see the new world premieres automakers have lined up, but people are more important. Three new-model launch events at worldwide locations have been cancelled in the past week, with more likely to follow.

Even with those no-shows, Geneva will be a big event and few expect it to fade away like the Frankfurt Motor Show which, due to the poor turnout last autumn, has been cancelled going forward. The ban runs until 15 March. The decision falls 3 days before the opening of the exhibition to the media.

"We are aware that this measure will have a significant impact on public life", said Switzerland's interior minister, Alain Berset. "This is a case of force majeure and a tremendous loss for the manufacturers who have invested massively in their presence in Geneva", said Maurice Turrettini, the chairman of the GIMS, on Friday.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the ban would also affect meetings at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva. We would like to warmly thank all those involved in the organisation of the 2020 edition of GIMS.
