Earlier this year, after the actor who plays Alex Karev, Justin Chambers, confirmed his exit from the show in an interview with Deadline, it was revealed that his last episode had already aired, and fans of the show were not happy about it.
Over the last couple of weeks, he stopped answering calls from his wife, Jo (Camilla Luddington) and momentarily appeared to be typing a text to Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), but the text never appeared.
The episode, titled "Leave a Light On", will "feature a farewell to Alex Karev, providing closure to his character's exit", ABC said in a statement.
"We're saying goodbye to Dr. Alex Karev", the title cards read. Next Thursday's episode will be the official sendoff, as announced with an emotional trailer at the end of this week's episode.
Justin Chambers' final episode on Grey's Anatomy airs Thursday at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. He said that he was looking to diversifying his acting roles and career choices.

"And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time".
"We're episode by episode, illuminating the story of where Alex is", showrunner Krista Vernoff previously told Variety.
"It's a bit of a mystery [what's going on]".
Now Jo has no idea where he is, but she's confident that he's just left her, which is an ice-cold move on its own, but it's even worse when you remember that's what Izzie (Katherine Heigl) did to him in Season 6.
It is unknown how exactly Alex will leave the series and fans have long begged showrunners not to kill him off, as they did with other major characters like Patrick Dempsey's Derek Shepherd and Chyler Leigh's Lexie Grey - to name a few. "But it takes a while to get there".
