Still, Rio has huge iron ore operations that create the vital ingredient for steelmaking, a highly polluting industry that involves adding coking coal to make carbon steel.

The iron ore production at Pilbara stood at 326.7 million tonnes (on a 100 per cent basis), down by 3 per cent against pcp, which could be accounted for the operational changes in the face of tropical cyclones such as Veronica, Wallace, and Blake, encountered at the Pilbara region.

"We are closely monitoring the impact of the Covid-19 virus and are prepared for some short-term impacts, such as supply-chain issues".

The virus has spread to other countries, with infections sharply rising in South Korea, Italy and Iran, and fueled a global stocks selloff.

Centrally, Macquarie analysts were impressed by RIO's net debt position, iron ore cost guidance, and the strength of the miner's underlying earnings - which were in-line with the investment bank's forecasts. Rio Tinto is building its $2.6 billion Koodaideri iron ore mine and was also planning to start construction in the first half of 2020 for mining new deposits at its Tom Price mine. Net profit fell to $8.01bn from $13.64bn after a $1.7bn impairment charges, mainly against the Oyu Tolgoi underground project in Mongolia and the Yarwun alumina refinery in Australia.

Rio Tinto sold its last coal mine in 2018, making it the only diversified mining major with no coal assets.

However, annual profit before one-off items was up 18% at $10.37 billion, beating consensus expectations for an underlying profit of $10.13 billion based on data compiled by FactSet.

The Anglo-Australian miner also declared a final dividend of $2.31 per share, higher than $1.8 per share in 2018, but lower than consensus of $2.40 and it did not announce a special final dividend like previous year.

Ordinary dividends rose 24% with a record final payout. Prices in Shanghai closed up by a quarter past year.

The miner's warning comes on the heels of its best underlying earnings since 2011, buttressed by a sizable jump in iron ore prices previous year.

Rio Tinto Limited (ASX:RIO)- the Australian multi-commodity mammoth posted strong financial figures for yet another year.

However, Rio managed to ship 327.4 million tonnes (on a 100 per cent basis) of iron ore along with other factors resulted in a gross sales revenue of United States dollars 24,075 million, up by 29 per cent against pcp, from the iron ore business.

Rio Tinto also expects to produce between 530,000 tons and 570,000 tons of copper this year, and 3.1 million tons to 3.3 million tons of aluminum.
