"Shark Tank" judge Barbara Corcoran lost almost $400,000 in an elaborate email scam that tricked her staff.
Corcoran's company didn't detect the error until her real assistant noticed the hacker altered her email address. When asked what the money was for, the phisher even responded with a believable answer of real estate investment, something Corcoran does often.
Corcoran's bookkeeper received the deceitful email and falsely believed the email was sent to her by Corcoran's assistant. When the bookkeeper contacted the real assistant following that payment, they realized that they had been duped.
"I lost the $388,700 as a result of a fake email chain sent to my company", Corcoran told People.
Barbara actually does invest in the real estate and the company they were impersonating is a real company.
People reports the bookkeeper continued to correspond with the scammer, who was able to pretend to be the "Shark Tank" star's assistant thanks to a clever deception involving the name of Corcoran's actual assistant. The scammer imitated her assistant's email address and misspelled it with one letter. After founding the Corcoran Group in 1973 with just $1,000, she went on to sell it to Realogy in 2001 for, according to The Wall Street Journal, $66 million.
