State of Alaska can now test for novel coronavirus

"Now we need to start taking additional actions to slow down the spread of the disease".

A woman is being treated for novel coronavirus at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View.

It marks the 63rd case in the United States, California's 10th case, and the 3rd case in the county.

Authorities have suggested that the first possible COVID-19 transmission was in a resident of Sacramento County.

On Friday, it was reported that the woman is in "serious condition", as the source of her transmission remains a mystery.

Cody said an infectious diseases physician contacted the health department Wednesday about a patient she was treating.

"CDC first heard about this case from public health colleagues in California last Sunday, Feb. 23", she said.

These two cases are about 90 miles apart, and are not thought to be connected, the Post reported. The new patient has not traveled to Solano County, officials said.

"As soon as that case was recognized, we met and we revised our case definition for persons under investigation", Redfield said.

"The recommendation should be when a clinician or public health individual suspects coronavirus, then we should be able to get a test for coronavirus, so that's the current guidance that went out today", said Redfield.

Terrifying! A second case of "community transmission" of the Wuhan coronavirus has now been confirmed in Santa Clara County, marking the first two US instances - both in the Bay Area - of an infection with no discernible connection to a traveler returned from China.

Many state and local laboratories have been unable to test for the virus until recent days, because of a problem with a test developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The global count of those sickened by the virus hovered Friday around 83,000 and caused more than 2,800 deaths, a lot of them in China. She also said that by next week, six U.S. flu surveillance sites will also begin testing for COVID-19, in an effort to cast a wider net on the novel coronavirus, which has spread to 53 countries since it was first identified in Wuhan, China, less than 3 month ago.

Bera, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific and Nonproliferation, questioned CDC director Robert Redfield, who said the agency's testing guidelines were updated Thursday as a result of the case.

"Since the patient did not fit the existing CDC criteria for COVID-19, a test was not immediately administered".

Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel says the local testing "is good news for MA, as testing at the State Public Health Laboratory will speed up obtaining test results for Persons Under Investigation and expedite ongoing testing of any confirmed case in recovery".

The turnaround time for test results is expected to be 24 hours, instead of up to a week with the CDC.

"We have just a few hundred testing kits in the state of California, and that's surveillance testing as well as diagnostic testing", California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday. But she did not directly address how limited testing could affect the case count.

As of Friday, the World Health Organization reported that there were more than 82,000 cases worldwide, from 46 countries.

She later added, "While the immediate risk to the general American public remains low, and the USA government is doing everything we can to keep it low. But it's different from the other two cases in an important way.Our third case did not recently travel overseas or have any known contact with a recent traveler or infected person", Dr. Cody told an afternoon news conference.

"We have a team of people as protocol, well established to track and trace every point of contact of the individual".

"The situation has evolved and continues to evolve very quickly", she said.

In the meantime, Ghebreyesus said people should be sure to wash their hands and regularly clean surfaces with disinfectant.

By this weekend, 93 labs across the US are expected to have testing capabilities, said US Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar.

That statement led to a number of California politicians and others to accuse the CDC of not moving fast enough to quell the spread of the virus.
