L'acteur Harrison Ford, lui, sera bien de la partie. En effet, après avoir remplacé le scénariste David Koepp par Jonathan Kasdan, le fils de Lawrence, auteur des Aventuriers de l'Arche perdue, c'est au tour de Steven Spielberg de quitter sa réalisation.

Si les négociations ne sont pas totalement terminées, le nom de son successeur a été dévoilé: il s'agit de James Mangold, connu pour avoir signé Copland avec Sylvester Stallone et plus récemment Le Mans 66. Steven Spielberg restera producteur de cet Indiana Jones 5 mais ne sera pas directement derrière la caméra, ce qui est donc une première depuis le début de la saga de l'archéologue au fouet en 1981. Il met actuellement la touche finale à une nouvelle version de la comédie musicale "West Side Story", attendue sur les écrans en décembre prochain. Il y a quelques semaines, la présidente de LucasFilm dévoilait qu'Indiana Jones 5 ne serait "pas un reboot, [mais bien] une continuation".

Initialement prévue le 19 juillet 2019, la sortie du film a d'abord été repoussée au 10 juillet 2020 puis désormais au 9 juillet 2021, date à laquelle Harrison Ford s'apprêtera à fêter ses 79 ans.
