South Korea reported 131 new cases of the new coronavirus on Tuesday, marking the slowest one-day rise in confirmed cases in two weeks and bringing the nation's total infections to 7,513.

He said his country will be recognized for the exemplary way it has prevented the spread of the virus, if it can sustain that trend and enter a phase of stability.

"We're fully confident that we can continue to perform the functions that the Pentagon needs to perform if we have some type of outbreak in the building", Defense Secretary Mark Esper told reporters at the Pentagon last Thursday. "We've come this far thanks to the citizens who were united and cooperated well with the government. Please be a little bit more patient and stay away from mass gatherings such as religious events".

Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun also said at a separate meeting that he was still extremely cautious but "there's hope we can reach a turning point in the near future".

Health authorities say the number of new infections being identified has dwindled as most of the roughly 200,000 followers of a fringe Christian church at the center of the epidemic in the hard-hit southeastern city of Daegu have now been tested.
