The online retailer said it will also temporarily raise pay by $2 an hour through the end of April for hourly employees who work at its warehouses, delivery centers and Whole Foods grocery stores. The wage increases will be approximately $2 per hour in the USA, £2 per hour in the United Kingdom, and approximately €2 per hour in other European countries. "We are seeing a significant increase in demand, which means our labor needs are unprecedented for this time of year".

The outbreak has been especially hard for gig economy workers as global travel restrictions leave airports almost empty and more people are advised to work from home. The company said it was working with the businesses that sell on its platform to resolve both.

Thousands of Americans are telecommuting and self-isolating to slow the spread of COVID-19, the novel coronavirus that quickly escalated to a global pandemic. But it remains unclear what Amazon will do if a warehouse reports a coronavirus case among its workers.

Amazon's typically reliable logistics network has groaned under a mountain of orders as consumers avoid high streets and shopping centres, stock up on goods and purchase new IT equipment as millions work from home. "We want those people to know we welcome them on our teams until things return to normal and their past employer is able to bring them back", Amazon wrote.
