  • Australia imposes 14-day self-isolation on all arrivals

Six of the 18 Western Washington residents with the coronavirus have died as health officials rush to test more suspected cases and communities brace for spread of the disease.

The self-isolation rule is similar to measures announced for New Zealand by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern yesterday.

The rules were announced in a press conference from Mr Morrison this afternoon that followed a special national cabinet meeting about the government's response to coronavirus. "All of the places where we see the virus escalate very quickly through other parts of the world are in the northern hemisphere, they are in the latter part of their winter months", he said.

Morrison also reiterated Friday announcement of the effective ban on "non-essential" gatherings of 500 or more people, saying enforcement will also be handled by the states, though he called for "common sense" to prevail, as police resources would be best dedicated elsewhere.
