The disease has killed more than 6,500 people globally - including five Australians - since it was first identified in late 2019.

A group of researchers in Australia has reportedly found what they described as a potential cure for the coronavirus - and it's two existing drugs used to treat HIV and malaria.
According to Australian Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital Infectious Diseases Physician Professor, David Paterson, who is now testing two potential drugs in the lab.
He said that it wouldn't be wrong to consider the drugs a possible "treatment or cure" for the deadly respiratory infection.

Professor David Paterson hopes to have patients enrolled in a clinical trial of the drug by the end of March.

He explained that when one of the medications - it is not clear which - was given to humans inflamed with the coronavirus in Australia, the treatment caused the 'disappearance of the virus.' Patterson told Australian news site news.Com.Au the approach might be a potentially effective remedy.

Paterson said while the new COVID-19 medicines had successful outcomes in some patients, it had not been tested in a controlled or a comparative manner. He revealed that the newly discovered drug could be administered as oral tablets. "So, luckily we know that these drugs are already safe because they are approved for use in Australia, and used on millions of people worldwide".
When asked why they had to put a call out money, Prof Paterson said they "want to give as many people in Australia access to this" and can't take doctors away from their normal work.
The Coronavirus Action Fund hopes to raise $750,000 to go toward understanding and better treating COVID-19.
"The trials will start as soon as funding is secured", the fund states.
